Technology Management, Inc. and the Ohio Soybean Council jointly presented a first public demonstration of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system operating on vegetable oil made from soybeans, Ohio’s largest cash crop. The demonstration took place at the Ohio Soybean Council Pavilion at the annual Ohio State University Farm Science Review.

Funded by the USDA, the Ohio Soybean Council, and Ohio’s Third Frontier Program, TMI’s President Benson Lee said, “This is the first known instance where unblended soybean oil has been converted by a fuel cell system into electricity.” “This unique demonstration shows how TMI’s fuel cell systems enable Ohio’s small farms to become energy independent, by generating their own renewable energy onsite from soybean oil, Ohio’s largest cash crop,” Lee continued. “If fuel cells were available across the Midwest’s farm belt, they could enable America’s small farmers to play a direct role in reducing our nation’s dependency on foreign oil and consumption of fossil fuel.”

The Ohio Soybean Council awarded $50,000 to TMI to support a program entitled “Fuel Cell Conversion of Soybean Oil into Electricity”. This grant provides cost share to TMI’s 2004 Joint DOE/USDA Biomass R&D Initiative Program.

March 7, 2006
Edison Technology was awarded $1,000,000 for its Design for Manufacturability of TMI’s SOFC System project, which will develop TMI’s small-scale SOFC platform into a complete auxiliary power unit (APU) primarily to address anti-idling of over-the-road heavy trucks. Use of an APU to meet the electrical needs of today’s trucks will improve engine efficiency and allow the engine to be turned off when the truck is not moving, significantly reducing vehicle emissions and fuel consumption.
